Billing

Check your balance and add funds at app.distillabs.ai/billing.

distil labs bills against one prepaid balance in US dollars. A new account starts with $200. Jobs that run a model are priced when you submit them and paid from the balance. Everything else is free. The prices are on the pricing page.

Job Charged for Priced at the tier of
Teacher evaluation The tokens in the test set The teacher
Relabel traces The tokens in the traces it relabels, once for each teacher that relabels them Each teacher
Synthetic data generation The rows it generates, at the average length of your rows The teacher
Model training The tokens in the train set, times the number of epochs, priced separately for SFT and RLVR The student
Deployment One charge for each deployment The student

Free:

  • uploading datasets, traces and models
  • downloads
  • inference endpoints and their API keys
  • listing, reading and deleting anything

Every teacher and student has a price tier, such as low or medium. The teacher’s tier prices teacher evaluation, relabeling and synthetic data generation. The student’s tier prices training and deployment. Larger models and thinking variants are in the higher tiers.

Add --dry-run to a command that starts a billed job. It prints the estimated price and your balance. It doesn’t start the job or charge anything:

distil slm create-from-dataset --dry-run <dataset-id>
Dry run, nothing was started.
Estimated Cost:                         $12.40
Balance:                                $187.60
SFT Training Tokens: 4,812,000 (medium tier)

There’s one line for each kind of usage and tier the job is charged for. When the balance doesn’t cover the price, the output ends with a warning. These commands take --dry-run:

  • teacher-evaluation create-from-dataset
  • dataset relabel-traces-test, dataset relabel-traces-train
  • dataset generate-synthetic-data-test, dataset generate-synthetic-data-train
  • slm create-from-dataset
  • deployment create-from-slm

In the REST API, add ?dry_run=true to the same POST requests. The response is the price estimate instead of a new job:

{
  "charges": [{ "event": "sft_training_tokens", "tier": "medium", "quantity": 4812000 }],
  "price": { "usd": 12.4, "label": "$12.40" },
  "balance": { "usd": 187.6, "label": "$187.60" },
  "sufficient_balance": true
}

The price is estimated from your data and config when you submit the job, and the balance is charged right away. The charge is the estimate, not what the job ends up using.

If your balance doesn’t cover the estimated price, the job isn’t created and the request fails with 402 Payment Required:

This job costs $12.40 and your balance doesn't cover it. Please top up to start it.
distil billing balance
Balance: $187.60

With --output json it prints {"balance": {"usd": 187.6, "label": "$187.60"}}. The REST API returns the same from GET /billing/balance.

Open the billing page:

distil billing manage

This opens app.distillabs.ai/billing in your browser. In the dashboard, the same page is under Billing in the account menu.

  1. The first time, select Set up payment details. This opens a Stripe page where you add a card and a billing address.
  2. Back on the billing page, enter an amount from $5 to $10,000 under Add funds. The form shows the total you’ll be charged, tax included.
  3. Select Add funds. We charge your default payment method, and the funds show up in your balance once the payment goes through. If your bank asks you to confirm the payment, the page shows a Confirm payment link.

We email you an invoice for every payment.

Stripe calculates the tax from your billing address and tax ID, and the form shows the rate before you pay. Customers in Germany pay German VAT. Elsewhere in the EU, customers pay the VAT of their own country, unless they add an EU VAT ID: then the invoice is reverse charged and has no VAT. Customers outside the EU pay no tax.

The billing page has two tabs:

  • Credits: your balance, the funds you’ve added, and where they’ve gone.
  • Usage: what you’ve spent, by day and by kind of usage.

Manage payment & invoices opens Stripe, where you change your payment method, billing address and tax IDs, and download past invoices and receipts.
